iPod 5G nano. Notice the version. I am looking for a way to hack the firmware to tweak settings.

How do I

  1. Get the firmware out of it or from apple
  2. Disassemble it?
  3. Recompile it after editing
  4. Get it back on the device?

1. Probably extract it from iTunes updates 2. Find whatever processor it uses and get a disassembler for that. (its probably encrypted) If you are just looking to run your own code on the device, rather than changing its operating system, check out this book: amazon.com/Hacking-Securing-iOS-Applications-Hijacking/dp/… – dext0rb May 28 '12 at 1:38

If you want to get into firmware hacking your shiny device, check rockbox and FreeMyIpod. Besides that disassembling the firmware could be a violation of the ULA looking at Apples commonly draconian approach to users rights. I would leave the messy walled garden called Apple behind and look into the porjects mentioned above. FLOSS is way more hacking-friendly, has better accessible documentation and is way more welcoming that than closed coorporate ecosystems with angry guards.

rockbox & freemyipod do not work with the 5g. – Zurechtweiser May 28 '12 at 15:53
