I'd like to use something like the AEDR-8300-series reflective optical encoder module in a hobby project. Ideally someone with minimal to moderate skills should be able to reproduce it, which means no surface mount components, especially not leadless.

Is there something similar in a more hobby-friendly package? Either as a DIP module or, even better, something screw-down. Avago has a transmissive version as a C-shaped module that is screw-down, but this is not suitable for my application.

Why closed? It is not applicable to a small geographic area, nor a specific moment in time. And how is a question asking about any reflective encoder in a hobby-friendly package an "extraordinarily narrow situation"? – Tom Jun 13 '12 at 13:09

asking for people to look up other packages of an existing chip that is similar is shopping, localized in time to what is being manufactured, and the question about the UK is localized geographically. – Kortuk Jun 13 '12 at 13:18

it is still a case of just looking up makers of different packages, it is shopping and the links will be very localized in time. I am sorry to say it is not a very good fit. Teaching you how to look into these things could be a good question, but I think you already know that and just are having a hard time finding something that may not even exist. SMD soldering can be made significantly more friendly if you bring the landing out further so that they can contact the pad with the soldering iron to the side of each pin easily. – Kortuk Jun 13 '12 at 13:42
