I'm looking for low profile board-to-board connectors with 2.54mm pitch that compatible with usual 2.54mm, and has smd and through hole versions

"2.54" isn't a measure of pitch, which should be obvious since it's dimensionless. – Olin Lathrop Aug 24 '12 at 23:07

@Olin - come on now, you know very well that the default unit of length is the furlong, as the length of an ox plough furrow. 2.54 furlongs is 511 m, so that's probably a high voltage/high current connector. – stevenvh Aug 25 '12 at 10:51

Shopping questions are generally off topic, but it happens I recently required a low profile board to board connector. I found these from Samtec, so I thought I should mention them:

BBL Series Headers
SDL Series Socket Strips

I don't think they do any in surface mount, but these are by far the lowest profile I found (as low as 3.89mm) and 2.54mm spacing. Farnell stock them.
