c programmer, embedded dabbler, power supply tinkerer. (also loser of three consecutive moderator elections on EE.SE.)

more than 13 years experience with switching power supplies at two different companies in the greater toronto area. worked my way from production technician to sustaining engineering, then product development (electrical and embedded). also fluent in vba and labview. currently studying project management theory while working as a power supply designer.

Without looking at your design, how can you expect proper answers?

Don't be lazy and post links to images via external hyperlinks. If those links ever change, all of the context for the question gets lost. EE.SE has image hosting with imgur for that exact reason - the inlined images that I added will be here as long as EE.SE is.

comment What's the best MOSFET for switching small currents?
Too broad. Please narrow down what you want to achieve, per these comments, by including the relevant requested information in your original question.

Details like this really belong in the question.

A USB-sourced +5V rail is not going to be able to support high current without appropriate resistors on the +D and -D signals. I would check for input sags as well as the previous suggestions of appropriate input and output capacitors.

1.8V is low even for a logic-level FET. Which FETs are you using in your level-shifting circuit?

comment Can a Zener diode be used in place of a Schottky?
Also, it's generally not recommended to accept an answer quickly (even if it's right) since there's little incentive to add to the conversation once the points are awarded. 24 hours is a typical 'cooling off' period before accepting.

comment Can a Zener diode be used in place of a Schottky?
Nope. When the switch (SW) is off, D1 is conducting the freewheeling inductor current in the forward direction. The diode is chosen to specifically not break down due to reverse voltage, per Dave's answer.

comment What are the downsides of using a LM7805 with a 11.1v Li Ion Laptop battery to charge a USB device?
I think 1A is more likely.

@Sidleg Post your resolution as an answer, not as a question edit - otherwise the question could remain open forever. (Answering your own question is OK here)

comment Serial Data Input through Microcontroller to Output Voltage
@ScottK If someone asks your for more details, put those details into your original question, not as comments to the question. It's not appropriate on SE sites. Also don't link to your private Photobucket site - SE has built-in image hosting (just point to the original and it will be cloned on imgur).
