comment Why is it important for mains power supplies to be isolated?
I still would try a new question. This one is several years old and won't garner much attention.

Grounding does not always imply earthing. My point talks about earthing, your question is about grounding. If you want to ask about grounding, pose a different question.

Don't ask questions in comments - post them as new questions.

comment Compensation of leakage reactance in high frequency transformer
I can't imagine you getting good coupling on a toroid with such a turns ratio. Please elaborate a little more on the application - what is the nature of the signal you're intending to transform (it is sinusoidal AC, chopped DC, etc.)

comment How to make a step down DC-DC converter fail safe?
@DaveTweed Seconded. Digitally controlled power is not a theoretical impossibility, it's effectively implemented already in hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of units already out there in the world, and can be easily implemented with a micro with good ADC and PWM resolutions. Furthermore, reasonable protection against a single-point failure for a step-down converter should be part of any rational design (just ask those people who do safety certifications for a living) and a series-pass element short is certainly a valid test condition.

comment What is a Schmitt Trigger and its application exactly?
This question is too broad and doesn't explain your prior research effort. What specifically do you not understand? What is your level of electronics expertise? If you do not include these details in your question it likely will be closed.

Any comments on OP's question of efficiency? Your answer is focused on reliability IMHO...
