Nov 25, 2014 at 18:19 comment added John D @Curnelious A 50/60 Hz transformer is necessarily large to be able to support the volt-seconds applied by the AC line. So by using a high frequency switching topology like the flyback, you can get away with a much smaller transformer. Not to mention getting good regulation.
