Jun 30, 2023 at 18:19 comment added jonathanjo If it was me I'd try to make a digital-input to IR transmission with a MCU such as a ATTiny and build it into the housing. It's a very "software" approach, but is safe. If I wanted to find out about touch controllers (which I know nothing about) I'd try switching capacitors. Have a look at fig 1.2 of Microchip AN 2934. In my ignorance I'm wondering if 8mm metal circle, a reed relay, 1MΩ and 100 pF to ground would work as the HBM.

Use for switch apparently originates with NEMA "the quickly repeated closure of a circuit to start a motor from rest for the purpose of accomplishing small movements of the driven machine.”, but now some are using it applied to switches to more-or-less mean "momentary" eg here and here
