Jul 28, 2018 at 16:55 comment added Guntis @Kozuch, i do not have experience. Just measuring voltage in + line is the cheapest way. You could also listen to CAN. I think that there are some kind of messages that indicates if engine is running. Voltage sensing has some caveats, for example, bad alternator.
Jul 1, 2018 at 16:16 comment added Kozuch I am interested in this topic. The idea with accelerometer is interesting but I fear some bigger or luxury cars may not produce any detectable vibrations at all... Does anyone have real world experience with this? Also how reliable is the voltage level detection over 12V from alternator? @Guntis do you have any experience?

Oct 31, 2013 at 19:08 comment added Guntis After visit to University we dedicated that must monitor voltage line when ignition is on. When voltage is over 14 volts, then transistor applies power to relay witch switch power to 12 to 5 volt converter. Also voltage monitor is attached to Raspberry pi to detect when ignition is switched off. And then power off itself. Another transistor, witch is backed up from capacitor keeps some time relay on. See schematics in my question.

Oct 26, 2013 at 16:16 comment added Guntis How i can get it done with accelerometer?
Oct 26, 2013 at 16:13 comment added Lior Bilia It depends on the car, there are way too many variations to consider. A more noble way to detect a running motor is an accelerometer.
