# Multimeter showing negative voltage on servo connection

I am trying too get my first (ever) servo sweeping back and forth and for some reason am having enormous difficulty with the wiring.

In the Fritzing pic below, I have the circuit connected (both + and - terminals) to a 5V power source (Arduino). The orange "signal" (or "pulse") line is connected to an output pin on the Arduino. Because, for reasons you'll see next, I'm convinced this is a wiring issue and not and Arduino/code issue, I've omitted the Arduino from the diagram/pic for simplicity's sake.

When I power this on, nothing happens. At first I thought it was a code issue, but then I busted out my multimeter, setting it to its 6V setting. In the pic above, you'll see two contact points in purple; these are the board connections to the Arduino's 5V and GND connectors respectively. When I test them with the multimeter, they do in fact read about 5V. So far so good.

However, when I test the green connections in the pic above (the power connections between the breadboard and the servo), the multimeter tells me that there is -20V (that's negative 20V) passing through the servo!?!?

I may very well have a code issue, but this is certainly not correct either. Am I wiring this up wrong, if so, how? If everything looks OK, what are my next steps for debugging/troubleshooting here?

• What happens if you get rid of the breadboard and directly connect the wires? If you depower the whole thing, what resistance to you measure between the two black wires plugged into the breadboard as shown, and between the two red wires? Also, what voltage do you measure on the power with the signal lead disconnected or the Arduino held in reset, so that you know that your meter isn't being wildly confused by a pulsed signal it is not designed to measure - if one of your power leads is unconnected, you may well end up with the pulsed signal showing up on it. • What happens if you push a capacitor across the supply lines? Say 10 ~ 100µF? Notice these caps have a polarity. Jun 14 '15 at 7:50
• Thanks @jippie (+1) - so I hooked the servo directly to the Arduino's 5V annd GND and plugged my Arduino into my laptop's USB port. Instantly the servo started freaking out (at least now I know it's not a bad servo!) and I started getting "Power Surge" warnings on my computer. I found this Arduino servo tutorial that, like your suggestion, recommends putting a capacitor in between the Arduino and the servo. That tutorial recommends 470 micro-Farads, whereas you recommend 100. Thoughts? Jun 14 '15 at 14:49
• Just try which one works for you, larger is generally better in this case ... If you use large electrolytics, you should put a 100nF ceramic in parallel to effectively suppress high frequency noise on the power lines. I depends on current drawn which value is best. Jun 14 '15 at 16:00
