I know what resistor I would use, but now I want to replace the resistor with a transformer because resistors get very hot even when used correctly.
A transformer on the other hand will step down the voltage.
Here is what is going on currently:
R1 is a 150 ohm 10 watt resistor, and
R2 is a 220 ohm 10 watt resistor.
The whole string has these specs:
120 volts (outlet)
This means each bulb is:

However, the downside of using a resistor is that it gets very hot, and according to the heat chart, in order for it to be cool enough even to not burn to the touch, it would need to have a very high wattage that is impractical. So I was looking for an alternative to the resistor so I learned that I could step down the voltage with a transformer.

See this new schematic with transformers instead of resistors:
So if that is right, it would mean that for example on the T1 string, the remaining voltage going through the remaining bulbs would be 93.6v.
Assuming the transformer does not affect amperage, then that means that going through the remaining 39 bulbs on that string are:
15.912w / 39 bulbs = 0.408w through each bulb
This is the original wattage going through each bulb, which is perfect.
So I have a few questions about this:
- How do I calculate the transformer I need?
- Can you have a small transformer or is it a big thing?
- Would the transformer not get hot?
- Any other variables to consider?
