My LCD back-light strip has broken (LEDs exploded) so I want to replace the LEDs.

I measured the output of the wire that act as source for TV strip, it yields 35 V, so am asking if I can take the LEDs of 12 V strip (just the LEDs) and put it in the strip of the TV?

One more question about 12 V/5 meter strip - does this mean that the whole 5 meter's voltage is 12? And when cutting part of it how much voltage will it need?

    \$\begingroup\$ LEDs don't just explode for no good reason. If you don't identify and fix the root cause, there is a good chance any replacement LEDs will explode as soon as you flip the power switch. \$\endgroup\$ – Dampmaskin Nov 9 '17 at 15:28

LED Strips are parrallel, if you put 12v in one side theoretically you should get 12v out the other side, however in reality there will be a slight voltage drop over 5 meters.

If you connect three 12v strips in series you should be able to light the led strips up without damaging anything.

When i did this on my own TV i didnt trust the existing powersource because as Dampmaskin said theres a good chance that whatever caused your LEDs to die is still happening. I just ran it off a separate 12v power supply. What i didn't take into account was the brightness of my 12v strip was different to the factory LEDs and even when viewed through the factory diffuser there were obvious points of light so more diffusal was necessary.

As someone who has done this before i can tell you that Richard Chambers has it right, get it fixed under professionally preferably under warranty.

  • \$\begingroup\$ I do that all the time, right now I have 2 LED strips running in series that have been burning continuously for 5 years off a 24V supply. (got a fantastic deal on GE LED supplies but they're 24V, didn't want to ante up for 24V strips). \$\endgroup\$ – Harper Nov 15 '17 at 5:20
