So I got my first multimeter today... I understand the basics needed, but maybe I was a bit overzealous...

My TV remote has 6 pins sticking out next to where the batteries go. I assume these are for programming/testing in the factory. I tested continuity between all of the pins with the batteries inserted. I can also measure voltage that comes out of the pins: 3.5v coming out between 2 of them.

I can even power an LED with differing levels of brightness between a few of the pins. Maybe one of these connections caused an overwrite. I did not ground myself before doing this either, so maybe I'm totally to blame.

How likely is it my multimeter, on continuity mode corrupted the program chip in the remote? It no longer works, even with brand new working batteries. I tested the IR light at the top with my phone's camera and there's no flashing.

    \$\begingroup\$ Never use a continuity tester on a powered circuit. You can try removing the batteries overnight but it's likely the device is toast. \$\endgroup\$ – Chris Stratton Dec 6 '18 at 1:18

  • \$\begingroup\$ It's a relative long shot, but the idea is to try try to fully reset the electrical state without the risk of further damage that faster methods might create. What do you have to lose? \$\endgroup\$ – Chris Stratton Dec 6 '18 at 2:01
