I build LED strip lights using old florescent shop lights metal reflectors and used as the heat sink solution for the strip stick on LED light.

Total of the LED strip was about 6.5 meters and I purchased a 450 watt computer power supply to run them. I wired so they would run on 12 volts.

Everything was running fine for about 2 weeks. However the other day, when I tried to turn them on, they would turn on for about 10 seconds and go off. I checked if the PS was dead, but I could see the fan moving and sound of it.

I tested the LED strips and made sure some wiring did not touch each other + & -. Today I tried again and light just blinked and that was it. But this time it looks like the power supply died as well!

I have very limited knowledge of testing it, but would love to pick few brains here if there is something I could test or perhaps fix. Power supply was purchased brand new, 450 watts, it's Kentex brand.

Thank you so much for your help.

\$\begingroup\$ Sounds like a bad connection if fan still runs. Do you have a DMM? \$\endgroup\$ – Sunnyskyguy EE75 Jan 8 at 1:22
  • \$\begingroup\$ What is the power rating of just the 12V rail you attached to in the power supply and how many watts of LEDs are you running total? \$\endgroup\$ – K H Jan 8 at 4:58
  • \$\begingroup\$ according to some Do it your self forum u only need to connect yellow & black which will run on 12 Volt and another black and green wire by their advice should be fuse together , not sure why ? total max watts is 450 on this PS after trying and plugin it again last nigh ( no LED strip attached ) fen would turn about one rpm and that all, I think this PS is dead! But why did run for good 2 weeks with no problem ? the total of watts on this LED 6 meter strip is like For 5 meter strip of 5050 LED they run about 100 watts per 5 meter and my total length was 6.5 meters so 450 watts should be plenty \$\endgroup\$ – les Jan 10 at 3:06
