I just built my first guitar pedal (a Bazz Fuss fuzz pedal), and now I'm messing around with the electronics a little bit. I was just wondering how I could target specific frequencies with the pedal. For instance, how could I make a pedal that focuses distortion on higher or lower frequencies?

Poking around on the internet a bit, I found that the input capacitor on my pedal, the one right after my input jack, is the one that controls it, but how does the capacitance correspond to the frequency?

Here's a little schematic for the pedal, found on this website. I actually ended up using a 2.2uf capacitor for the input.

  • \$\begingroup\$ You might want more bass than fuzz so increase caps 10x to 100x \$\endgroup\$ – Sunnyskyguy EE75 Apr 1 at 2:21
  • \$\begingroup\$ @Hearth That thing isn't a filter, really. It's more of a "do really mean stuff to audio." Kind of like over-riding and chopping up part of each cycle with a square wave, but leaving some of the audio. I don't think the OP will find much on the web here or anywhere on this disaster of a circuit. Certainly not in any proper book on filters. (I've no clue how I'd "adjust" that thing per the user's question. The OP might as well just randomly add stuff to it to see if it works to his liking.) \$\endgroup\$ – jonk Apr 1 at 2:50
  • \$\begingroup\$ @jonk it might be a KINDA funky circuit, but it sounds super good for how crazy simple it is. Do you have any suggestions on how I could make it less of a "disaster"? \$\endgroup\$ – Winj42 Apr 4 at 1:02
  • \$\begingroup\$ @Winj42 I don't know what I could contribute. If you like what it does to sound, that's fine. I can't criticize. But if you liked random saws-all holes cut through half of the walls of your home and wanted to know how to improve it? I wouldn't know what to say. This is out of my skill-set. Perhaps you like Picasso's cubist art better than Dali's surrealism. Who am I to tell you which is a disaster and which is art? What would you do to fix up Picasso's art and make it less of a disaster? For those who like it, anything I tried would not be appreciated. \$\endgroup\$ – jonk Apr 4 at 3:30
