I made my own WiFi circuit board using ESP8266EX and a W25Q32 flash (bought from Mouser). My problem is it is not flashing. I used NodeMCU flasher and ESP flashing tool. It only gives boot mode 1,7 when try to flash and boot mode 3,7 when I reset, at 74880 baud rate (which looks correct according to my knowledge).

For test my surrounding circuitry, I replaced ESP8266EX and flash with an existing ESP01's ESP chip and flash. I can flash my circuit with that chip and flash, without an error and I can run code. (Also I tried several new ESP8266EXs and W25Q32s and they didn't work.)

Are there any additional things I should do when I use a brand-new ESP8266EX and empty W25Q32 to make it flash?

  • \$\begingroup\$ This is entirely unanswerable without details of your implementation: show the schematic, board layout, and good pictures of the result. If you are in fact dealing with bare chips an obvious suspect would be soldering of the QFN. Get a logic analyzer on the flash pins and see what is going on. Do a side by side closeup comparison of working vs. non-working chip labeling. Put one of your non-working chips on the ESP01 board... Use a problem chip with a flash preprogrammed by a working one. Use a 3v3 Arduino or something to compare ID and config registers of the flashes. \$\endgroup\$ – Chris Stratton Aug 6 at 20:53

Logic analyzer captures both TX and RX, but the RX of the ESP8266EX is completely silent(It's wiring is correct, I checked several times). If you want, I'll post my schematic and board layout ASAP. Putting my non working chips in ESP01 gave me nothing but same error (Reset cause 2 boot mode 1,7). The problematic chip and pre programmed flash combination runs the code in the flash. I'll put my board and schematic ASAP. \$\endgroup\$ – Kasun Nimantha Aug 7 at 2:52
