Art Of Electronics - How does the phasor diagram explain away 3db verses 6db confusion

Hi,
In the follwoing two images, I am having a problem seeing the confusion the author is talking about and more importantly how he uses the phasor … Again, I'm not seeing how the phasor diagram explains all this.
Thanks for the great help. I've never been this far in this book as yet and think the other chapters are home free. :) …
