Ribbon cable has multiple insulated wires bonded together and running parallel to each other. Because the wires run across a flat plane they tend to be wide and flat resembling a ribbon hence the name. Ribbon cables are often designed to be used in conjunction with insulation-displacement connectors (IDC).

Fixing the pins in a flex cable
This is a flex cable from a kindle that connects the motherboard to the lcd.
