A semiconductor device which when placed behind a lens and has an image formed on it's surface spatially and temporally samples the charge generated from the incident light. These samples form an internal representation of the incident light. Types of image sensors that are common are CCDs, CIS (Contact Image sensors), APS (Active Pixel devices) and CIS (CMOS Image Sensors)
