A flexible, transparent, fine fibre made of extruded silica to function as a wave guide to transmitting signals through light

Optic fibers are largely used on communications, presenting the following advantages over regular copper wires:

  • Greater bandwitdh on a significantly thinner cable, thus costing less.
  • Imune to electromagnetic interference.

Since the light travel along them, they're also used on many lighting applications, generally grouped in bundles.
