Of course, those only tend to show up on architectures that don't care about backwards compatibility - if x86 tried something like that when introducing instruction pipelining, almost everyone would simply call it wrong (after all, they just upgraded their CPU, and their applications stopped working!). So x86 has to make sure the application doesn't notice when improvements like this are added to the CPU - until we got to multi-core CPUs anyway... :D | |
