Changing 'third resistor' to 'second resistor' because there're only 2 resistors. When I was thinking of the question, I was thinking about the voltage divider and I mentally split R into R1 and R2. My bad!

What is the third resistor for in this potentiometer reference circuit?

In the reference circuit from this datasheet for a potentiometer, what is R_L for? Why did they pick 100 x R? Bonus question, how do I pick a good value for C?
