May 21, 2020 at 6:17 | comment | added | boseliker | Ah I just realised that if RL is absent the circuit is open, so there's no current going through that other resistor and therefore no voltage drop, meaning Vin does in fact equal Vout (when diode is off). This whole time I was thinking that if RL is absent then there's a wire with no resistance where Vout is, which would suggest that Vout=0. I have no idea how I came to that conclusion. So Vin = Vout for the circuit in the image, for any value of R, as long as the diode is off. But if RL is not either absent or a very large number, then Vout will be some fraction of Vin. I think I get it now. | |
