Jul 24, 2022 at 5:27 comment added PStechPaul Just saw other answers and comments so the first sentence does not apply. But I still recommend a scope.
Jul 24, 2022 at 5:14 comment added PStechPaul 6N137 is only rated for operation at 4.5 to 5.5 VDC. Anyone seriously working on electronic designs should have a scope, even a cheap one like the DSO-138 which is less than $30 for the kit. jyetech.com/dso138mini-oscilloscope-diy-kit

Jul 17, 2022 at 17:59 comment added Math Keeps Me Busy Probing with a scope is almost always useful when trying to troubleshoot a circuit. Even if a scope probe fails to reveal the source of a problem, it will almost always allow you to narrow the possibilities, and show you parts of a circuit that are working correctly.

Rollback to Revision 2
Jul 17, 2022 at 17:25 comment added Andy aka @Satkarni the answer I gave was valid until you specified that the device used was the "-L" version. You ought to be clearer in your question about this because it wasn't my fault that you didn't specify the correct part. To make it easier, I'm rolling back your question to the previous state. Please edit your question carefully so as not to say my answer was wrong; it was correct at the time it became an answer.

Jul 17, 2022 at 10:27 comment added Satkarni With isolation, also works perfectly fine one way for all baud rates (9600-115200). I am at a loss to get it to work both ways. I have tested this on a breadboard, so layout issue is not relevant.
Jul 17, 2022 at 10:25 comment added Satkarni Yes. Tested multiple times on multiple laptops, USB ports. Works perfectly fine without isolation.
