Apr 23, 2023 at 18:34 comment added ocrdu The battery's voltage can be larger than the reference voltage, especially if you measure in single-ended mode. A voltage divider also limits the current into the ADC when something goes wrong, providing some (not full) protection. For differential mode, and if you want to use the full differential range (Vin+ - Vin-), you will also have to do some voltage mapping, see other answer for detail.
