Nov 8 at 11:08 | comment | added | Viermusketiere | Okay, thanks for the hint. If I wanted to keep the isolation as the components are only a few extra cents in respect to the whole project, should I also tie the GNDISO plane to the chassis?
Nov 8 at 11:05 | comment | added | user317139 | Absolutely, except if the serial line stand in a heavily polluted environment (e.g. TIG-soldering workshop). Even, the RS232 has some tolerance against that.
Nov 8 at 11:02 | comment | added | Viermusketiere | We have to assume, that the generator is properly grounded and the electrical system available from the wall socket is also properly grounded. In this case there shouldn't be any requirements for proper isolation if I understand you correctly?
Nov 8 at 10:58 | comment | added | user317139 | If the generator is properly tied to the (same) local ground than the board, no issue. On the contrary, if your generator act as a radio station and the only obvious link is the serial line... I think it is better to treat the problem at root. If not, you must have full isolation of the serial line, including its ground/shield lines.
Nov 8 at 10:49 | comment | added | Viermusketiere | Thanks for the hint. The RS232 will only communicate with devices which are within a range of about two metres. It can occur, that the device attached via the RS232 interface is powered by a generator while the board itself is powered from a regular wall socket. Is the isolation in that case still negligible?
Nov 8 at 10:37 | comment | added | user317139 | And as the RS232 interface is to be seen as a local communication, isolation is generally not needed. It could make sense only for e.g. RS485 and long lines. I fear that you are looking too forward!
