Diodes are semiconductor components made from a P-type (or metal in Schottky diodes) and N-type material (usually silicon, but germanium, selenium, and gallium arsenide can also be used), that allow current to flow in one direction only.

Why don't relays incorporate flyback diodes?

I can say from experience that some relays do have built in diodes, but sadly this seems to just increase the amount of damage a simple misconnection can cause. … IMO there really isn't one solution that fits all circumstances, though back-to-back zener diodes come close. …
