A semiconductor device which when placed behind a lens and has an image formed on it's surface spatially and temporally samples the charge generated from the incident light. These samples form an internal representation of the incident light. First of all: standard CCD sensors are sensitive to wavelength far beyond 700nm. As much as I know Si-sensors are even more sensitive for near-IR light than for visible light.
