A linear voltage or current regulator provides a continuous non-pulsed supply of current or voltage. It may be fixed or adjustable, and can be put under control by a CPU/MPU. In spite of sometimes low efficiency they are popular because they provide clean noise-free DC current or voltage, as opposed to switching supplies that can be very efficient with power regulation but induce much RF noise into the outputs which need extra parts to filter out.
