Short for Radio Frequency, i.e. frequencies at which radiation (intentional or not) plays a role. Typically associated with wireless communications, but also relevant for high-speed PCB design.

RF Design - Microstrip vs. Lumped Components

There really isn't a hard and fast rule. The Advantage of lumped components is that they are smaller at these frequencies, so your board area will be smaller. If you go to microstrip elements for fi …

Techniques for Attenuating a 5GHz Signal Between?

You're really not using the right radios for this. is there a reason you picked these? Can you put a wall between them? How about some anti-static shielding foam?

What are the functional differences between a digital sampling 'scope and a digital spectrum...

Well, you're not going to be making RF measurements up to 30 GHz without spending a bunch of money, so either path is big bucks. … You won't get eye diagrams out of a spectrum analyzer, it's a useless measurement @ RF. That's a demodulated signal measurement. Ultimately, if you want time domain data, then use an oscilloscope. …

Using low-noise amplifiers

That receiver sensitivity seems awfully poor to me, are you sure you're reading it right? Based on this, you should add ~ 50 dB of gain to the front end. You should also add some filtering between t …

Dipole antenna length calculation -- why so much variation?

so at 100 MHz, Calculator one yields a dipole antenna length of 4.68 feet, while calculator two give a length of 4.6822 feet. How closely do you expect them to match?

What variable-IF tuner IC can I use for UHF applications?

I think that most of the Zero IF receiver IC's that are available have ADC's build in, so you actually have a digital output. Even without this, ZIF receivers have IQ baseband outputs, where you have …

High frequency RF coupler manufacturing tips

Next you're going to need to figure out how you're going to mechanically support the RF connectors so that they don't rip off the board when you make cabled connections to them. … For example here is a link to a Pasternak RF directional coupler (https://www.pasternack.com/directional-10-db-2.92mm-coupler-40-ghz-pe2cp1133-10-p.aspx) which is an example of what a commercial coupler …

RF Isolator or Circulator for Commercial Product

This is actually addressed at the system level. LTE uses either Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) or Time Division Duplexing (TDD). In FDD, the transmit and receive signals are at different frequen …

Why phase noise is critical in communication systems

While you're interested in the specifics of phase noise, the other requirement that a OCXO or TXCO could meet is an absolute frequency error requirement. Satellite links for LEO/MEO orbits will create …

Guideline for Impedance Matching (simplified cases)

The general rule of thumb for RF circuitry is that inputs and outputs are matched to 50 Ohms, so for Case 2 and Case 3 you would want to have the source and load presenting a 50 Ohm Output / Input impedance …

Can I merge two impedance matching circuits?

You should be able to do that. On the Antenna side, looking into that 2.2pF cap you should see 50 Ohm. On the transmitter side, you should see 50 Ohms looking in to the node between C5 and C6. Now, th …

finding rf 175 Mhz harmonic source

If you've got a 25 MHz Square wave oscillator, then it's not surprising to see harmonics up to the 7th. If it's a sine wave oscillator, I suspect your Ethernet Phy is doing some squaring up.

Prototyping an antenna array receiver

1- an RF Receiver is what you want to sit between the Antenna and ADC. Something like the Lime LM6002 or the AD9361 transceiver IC's might make this a lot easier. … Using narrow band channels for your Experimentation would also help, as that would reduce the RF BW, and reduce the bitrate out of the FPGA. …
